What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates moves pilates from the mat to a piece of equipment called the ‘Reformer’. I’ve heard it described as a ‘giant mousetrap’ or something you might see in 50 Shades…but to help visualise, it is a carriage which moves forwards and backwards, you can add different resistance, there is a footbar at the base and then a platform which is static.

Following up there is a headrest and shoulder rests (which can be removed) and then hooks behind the back of the headrest which house the hand and foot straps. Accessories include the sitting box, ball, circle and hand weights.

Reformer Pilates has evolved from the 20th Century where Joseph Pilates first created a system of movements called ‘Contrology’ – this later became known as ‘pilates’ Reformer Pilates promotes core strength and alignment, muscle strength, flexibility and mobility.
